Hello Summer: Summer essentials

Updated: Jan 31, 2021

Hey, I know its summer and we are all so excited about the sun and getting out to get fresh air outdoors. However, there is some thing you need to take along before you head out. Especially since we are still in the middle of a pandemic. Yes you need your face masks and hand sanitizers if you are going to a crowded area. But there are other essential items to consider.

First you need to get yourself a water-resistant sunscreen with minimum SPF 30 protection. This protects your skin from harmful effect of the sun's ultraviolet radiation. SPF refers to the duration of time that it will take your skin to burn, therefore with a SPF-30 sunscreen, sunburn will take 30 times longer compared to wearing no sunscreen. However, do not be fooled by the numbers. Going higher on SPF number does not produce significantly higher protection and remember sunscreen should be used along with other measures to protect the skin. Apply your sunscreen 30 minutes before going out and reapply every 2 hours if outdoors for a prolonged time.

Secondly don't forget your sunglasses with both UVA and UVB protections. If you have a hat, why not slam on a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face from the sun. And lastly if possible wear a long loosely fitting clothings that cover your skin as much as possible. This could be a little bit tricky because after bundling up the whole of summer, I know you'll want to go out with shorts and sleeveless tops. But the more covered your skin the better. Do not rely solely on sunscreen. Anyway whichever way you choose to protect your skin remember to enjoy every bit of the sun, it wont be long before we go back to coats and jackets.

To wrap up, don't forget your SPF-30 sunscreen, wide-brimmed hat, UV-blocking sunglasses and long covering clothes. Happy summering everyone.
